Workforce hiring is a particularly high-risk component of the health care industry. Ineffective employees can be costly for the employer and can result in potential negative repercussions for patients in the health care environment. Job hiring is commonly conducted with preestablished criteria set forth in a job description; however, many organizations hire employees based on specific competency criteria. Competency-based hiring uses a list of preferred skills, knowledge, or abilities to guide the hiring process and can be oriented toward a position, organization, or even a career path. Competency-focused job descriptions are often lengthier because they provide a more thorough description of how skills will be used in the work environment.
