The role of leadership in the dietetics profession has been emphasized through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' (Academy) mission statement, "Empowering members to be food and nutrition leaders." Leadership is not limited to the few registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) holding formal leadership positions, but rather it is a responsibility for each RDN. The Academy's leadership definition is "the ability to inspire and guide others toward building and achieving a shared vision." This broad definition is appropriate for a profession comprising various practice areas; however, as specific practice areas are considered, more clarity is needed in defining leadership.
